No Whey!

First of all, thank you to everyone who asked about Jack. It's a very long drawn out story, so settle back and get comfortable.

Lets start with Peach. Dr. Henry checked her out and saw some drainage in the back of her throat. He said at this time her ears are fine and she looks to only have a cold. He said to watch her because it can easily turn into an ear infection. As of 9 this morning, she was still walking around gagging. I called Pam to check on the kids because Natey said he didn't feel well this morning either. She said that they are both playing well with their friends and told me about the gagging thing with Claire. Hopefully they'll get better soon.

Now for Jack. Dr. Henry seemed a little peeved that I was there again. He said that Jack didn't seem to be all that different from the last time I saw him. I explained that I could hear him breathing from across the room that morning and that I was SICK of him choking. Jack threw up a bunch of snot (sorry) on Tuesday night and I asked him WHERE the snot is if it wasn't in his chest. He said that it's just hanging out in the back of his throat causing him to gag. He asked me how often Jack gags. I told him that I've never kept track, but that it's numerous times a day and that it happens at all hours. He told me that he was concerned about the gagging. (ARE YOU KIDDING ME???) Yeah, me too! I told him that I suspected that Jack might be having some sort of a reaction to the dairy in my diet and so this is what we're doing. He gave him a steroid to try to kick the cough. I have to take dairy out of my diet, including whey. Do you know how much food contains some sort of dairy product? Popcorn has dairy in it for crying out loud. UGH!

Anyway, Jack will have to have a special formula until he and I can get the diary out of our systems. He'll be on the steroid for 7 days (or less if it works). After the 7 days of Jack being on the special formula, I can nurse him again. However, I'll just use the whole can due to the cost of the stinky stuff ($22). If I nurse him and he gets worse then we'll know it wasn't the diary. I should back up; if the steroid doesn't work then Jack will have to be admitted to the hospital. Dr. Henry wanted to keep him in the hospital yesterday, but with Justin being gone it obviously wouldn't work. I asked what he would do with Jack other than observe him if he put him in the hospital. He said that they would put a monitor on him so they would know his choking pattern and have a heart doctor look at him and also a GI specialist.

IF he has to be put in the hospital, they will do a sweat test checking for cystic fibrosis and also do an allergy test. So for now we wait and hope he gets better with the steroid. OH - check this out! Remember when I said that Jack didn't do well when I had chocolate? I thought it was from the caffeine, remember? Dr. Henry said most likely it was due to the milk in the milk chocolate that I was eating.

Thanks again for checking in on us. I just got off the phone with Justin. He was supposed to be in Sioux Falls between 3pm and 4pm, but is delayed in Chicago due to a plane coming out of Kentucky. He's been delayed 3 times now and is supposed to leave Chicago at 4pm. That would put him home at roughly 8 tonight. I hoped to be in bed by 6. I've had a rough few days. There is, however, a light at the end of my tunnel.

I'm glad to hear your husband is coming home soon....to give you some help and relief.
I don't know how single mom's do it.

Sorry that your kids are so sick.
Poor little Jack. It sounds like he has a lot going on. I hope that the steroid does work for him? What formula did they put him on? When Derek was sick as baby they he was put on Nutramigin and that was very expensive too.
That would be a bummer if he was allergic to milk.

Man, I don't envy you at all. If there is anything I can do to help (i.e. run an errand, watch one of your kids while you do an errand), please let me know. I'll do whatever I can.

Thanks for the update.

Kerrie, I am so glad that your reinforcement is returning. It stinks to be a single parent especially when there are sick kids! I hope that some questions get answered for you.

When my boy was a newborn he went through the gagging stuff and they told me the whole dairy thing too. My first thought was the same as yours - there's dairy in almost everything! But a few days went by and it all cleared up. He loves milk and eats all the dairy things now. I really hope you have the same result. Just keep praying over them, asking God for complete divine healing throughout their bodies.
